Spring is here! Spring is the time of the liver and gallbladder and a perfect opportunity to get anger, stress, frustration, stale blood and debris out of the crevices of your body. It is also the right time to cleanse your liver. Acupuncture is an effective modality to support liver health as well as the gross and micro-circulation system within the body -- so is CUPPING and Gu Sha! Cupping and Gu Sha (which I affectionately refer to as "SPOONING") are types of body work used by practitioners of Chinese Medicine. Fire is placed beneath a glass cup in order to remove oxygen from within the cup. It is then quickly placed on the body which creates a suction on the skin, fascia and muscle. Spooning/GuShi is the use of a spoon-like tool that scrapes against the skin, usually along the back. Both of these methods pull blood up to the skin producing reddening and sometimes bruising types of marks which are both diagnoses and remedy for problem areas. Different pressures of cupping are used for different outcomes and can range from light, medium to intense. Cupping and scraping are indicated around the Spring or any other time one needs to support the liver and muscles, strengthen the immune system - particularly allergies or acute symptoms with fever. It is used locally for painful trigger points and disc issues. If used appropriately, the cups and spoons can enhance energy in weak or tired persons.
